Queer-washing: Commercialisation of the LGBTQ+ Community through advertising

  • Develop knowledge and understanding of graphic design, art direction and wider visual communication from a range of historical, contextual and theoretical perspectives. Develop critical analysis and interpretation skills and become familiar with a range of research methodologies. Develop an understanding of the key discourses and debates surrounding contemporary visual communication design. Develop individual subject knowledge, which will form a solid research foundation for the final year dissertation.


  • This was a solo project in which I completed the following:

    • Conducted in-depth desk-based research

    • Conducted first-hand interviews

    • Sourced imagery

    • Layout design

    • Writing

    1. Research - I read a range of books, articles, journals and websites, and conducted research with two designers in the industry who have worked on LGBTQ+ brand campaigns.

    3. Images - I found suitable photos to aid my writing.

    4. Editing - I edited the essay into a printed magazine-style document.

  • For my undergraduate dissertation, I chose to explore the topic of “Queer-washing: Commercialisation of the LGBTQ+ Community through Advertising”. This is an ethical issue that is becoming more prevalent today as brands strive to be inclusive. However, as the dissertation explores, is their support and inclusiveness genuine, or is it merely for appearances?
